4G in Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana in 2026: what it means for SIM cameras
4G in Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana is now the main way people connect to mobile data, and that is why a 4G SIM camera works on so many farms that have no Wi-Fi. Here are the latest regulator figures we could confirm, and what they mean when you choose a camera and a SIM.

Kenya: 4G is where the growth is
The Communications Authority of Kenya’s statistics for January to March 2026 show 84.1 million active mobile subscriptions.[1] Between December 2025 and March 2026, 4G subscriptions rose from 44.1 million to 45.9 million, while 2G fell from 10.4 million to 9.7 million and 3G from 5.6 million to 5.0 million.[2] The regulator described an ongoing move away from 2G and 3G.[1]
Nigeria: just over half of connections are 4G
Figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission, reported by ThisDay, put 4G at 53.76 per cent of subscriptions in March 2026, with 2G still at 36.74 per cent and 5G at 4.2 per cent.[3] Total subscriptions reached 189,675,650 in May 2026.[4] A large 2G base means many rural phones still fall back to 2G, which is fine for calls but useless for video. Check 4G at the mounting point, not just “signal”.
Ghana: 4G spreading, with a new shared network
We did not find a recent official 4G subscription share for Ghana that we could confirm. What is confirmed is that Next Gen InfraCo, the wholesale 4G and 5G network operator, started full commercial operations in March 2026, live at first in parts of Accra, Kumasi and Tamale.[5] Outside those cities, coverage still depends on each mobile network’s own sites, so the test in a phone at the camera’s position matters even more.
| Country | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya | 45.9 million 4G subscriptions (up from 44.1 million) | March 2026 |
| Nigeria | 4G is 53.76% of subscriptions; 2G 36.74% | March 2026 |
| Ghana | Shared 4G/5G network live in parts of Accra, Kumasi and Tamale | March 2026 |
Subscription figures count SIM connections, not land area covered. A high national share does not mean a given farm has 4G.
What this means for a 4G SIM camera
- Buy 4G, not 3G. 3G subscriptions are shrinking in Kenya, and a 3G-only camera has nowhere to grow. Every model in our range is 4G LTE.
- Bands decide whether it connects at all. A camera only connects on 4G bands its module supports. Our Africa version covers B1, B3, B7, B8, B20 and B28, and we check your network’s bands before shipping. The SIM card guide lists the bands by network.
- Coverage figures are national; the camera is on one pole. Test a SIM in a phone at the exact spot. If 4G drops to 2G there, move the pole, raise it, or try another network.
- Data, not voice, is what you pay for. Alerts and short clips use a few gigabytes a month in our worked example; live view adds most of the rest.
For resellers: talk networks first
Most returns we hear about are a SIM or band problem, not a faulty camera. Stock the band version that matches the networks your customers use, sell the SIM and first data bundle with the camera, and set it up in front of the buyer. The country pages for Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana list the networks and the rules for selling SIM devices in each.
