Best CCTV camera for a shop in Nigeria when the power keeps going off

The best CCTV camera for a shop in Nigeria is not the one with the most megapixels. It is the one that is still recording when NEPA takes the light, that shows a face at the door clearly enough to use, and that you can check from your phone. Here is how to choose, place by place.

Start with what you need to see

Most shop losses happen at four points: the door, the counter and till, the stock room or back door, and the front of the shop after closing. Walk your shop and decide what each camera must show. At the door, the aim is a face you can recognise. At the till, it is hands and money. At night, it is anyone touching the shutter or the back door.

Counter and tillHands, cash, goodsFixed indoor camera above and behind the counter
Shutter and front, outsideAnyone at the shutter after closingSolar 4G camera on the wall or a pole

Power cuts decide which camera works

Outages are a normal part of running a shop. On 19 October 2026, for example, Ikeja Electric customers in Lagos got fewer hours of supply after national generation fell to about 477 MW.[1] A camera that stops when the light goes is off exactly when the shop is most exposed.

  • Wired kit (DVR and cameras): good pictures, cheap per camera, but the cameras, recorder and router all need power. Put the whole kit on an inverter or UPS sized for all of it.
  • Wi-Fi cameras: easy to fit, but they need both power and a working router. In a blackout both usually go.
  • Solar 4G cameras: their own panel, battery and SIM. They keep recording to the SD card and sending alerts through an outage, and there is no cable for anyone to cut. They suit the outside of the shop, where the panel can see the sun.

For most shops the best answer is a mix: indoor cameras on the inverter for the door and till, and one or two solar 4G cameras outside for the shutter and back door, which are the places thieves visit when the street is dark. Our article on solar-panel cameras during outages explains how long they run without sun.

Wireless CCTV camera price in Nigeria: what to compare

“Wireless” covers two different things in shop listings: Wi-Fi cameras that need your router, and 4G cameras that take a SIM. Prices for the 4G solar kind vary with the panel size, battery, number of lenses and night lights, so compare like with like. Ask the seller for the panel wattage, the battery size in mAh, the 4G bands, and whether the box includes a bracket and SD card.

We keep market listings and our own factory prices side by side on the solar camera price in Nigeria page. If you sell cameras rather than buy one, see wholesale; SIM-enabled devices need NCC type approval and registration before sale, and the NCC tightened those rules in September 2026.[2]

Five checks before you pay

  1. Test the picture at the door.Ask to see a recording of a face at the distance your door is from the camera.
  2. Ask what happens in a power cut.Which parts stop, and for how long the backup will run them.
  3. Check the 4G bandsfor a SIM camera against MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile at your shop; the Nigeria page lists them.
  4. Check storage. An SD card or recorder that keeps at least a week, and cloud clips if you want evidence off-site.
  5. Check the app.Alerts that arrive, playback that works on your phone, and more than one user for staff.
