Solar powered CCTV in Kenya: what a full set includes
In Kenyan shops a “CCTV full set” usually means a wired kit: cameras, a recorder, a hard disk, cable and a power supply. A solar powered CCTV set is different. Each camera is complete on its own, so the “set” is what comes in the box plus what you buy locally. Here is the full list.

Wired full set versus solar set
| Part | Wired full set | Solar powered set (per camera) |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | Usually 2, 4 or 8 | One camera, complete on its own |
| Recorder | DVR or NVR with a hard disk | None; SD card inside the camera |
| Power | Mains power supply, plus UPS if you add one | Solar panel and built-in battery |
| Cable | Coaxial or network cable to every camera | Only the short panel cable, on some models |
| Internet | Router or Wi-Fi at the site | 4G SIM card in each camera |
| Installation | Cable runs, often a technician | Bracket and screws, set up from the phone |
The practical difference: a wired set suits one building with power. A solar set suits places spread out or off the grid, such as gates, bomas, boreholes, greenhouses and stores, because each camera can go wherever there is sun and a 4G signal.
What should be in the box
- The camera, with the battery already inside.
- The solar panel, either fixed on top (like our SV-P2) or separate on a cable (like the SV-P1), so the camera can sit in shade.
- Brackets and screws for the camera and, if separate, the panel; ask whether a pole clamp is included if you are fixing to a pole.
- A quick-start guide with the app QR code.
- The band version and IMEI printed on the box, so you know it will work on your network.
Ask the seller whether an SD card is included and what size; many boxes do not have one.
What you add yourself
- A SIM card with data, from Safaricom, Airtel or Telkom, with the PIN removed. Check the camera’s bands against the network first; the Kenya page lists them.
- An SD card, if one is not included. A 64 or 128 GB card is common.
- A data bundle. Alerts and short clips used about 4.6 GB a month in the worked example in our SIM card guide; live view adds more.
4G coverage is now the norm for most Kenyan subscribers: 4G subscriptions rose from 44.1 million to 45.9 million between December 2025 and March 2026, while 2G and 3G both fell.[1]
Checks before you pay
- Panel size in watts.5 W for a busy or shaded site, 3 W for a sunny wall with few events.
- Battery in mAh.7,800 mAh is about two and a half days without sun in our worked example.
- 4G bands.Must match your network at the site, not just in town.
- Type approval.Kenya requires dealers of ICT equipment, which includes SIM devices, to have Communications Authority approval before selling.[2]
- Price per camera.A “full set” price for solar is usually per camera; compare on our solar camera price in Kenya page.
